DIY Braided Headband

As summer is winding down, I find myself bored of wearing the many headbands I already own. Instead of heading out to the mall to stock up with new ones, I decided to search around online for a DIY headband design. I found a great idea here (just want to make sure the author of 366 Days of Pinterest gets credit for her helpful tips and inspiration). It's a simple craft and very cheap to make with things that are lying around the house!

What you will need:

  • Three strands of fabric/chain/ribbon/thread/elastic (I chose a red ribbon, gold necklace chain, and red suede cord)
  • A hair elastic (preferably black or something that matches your hair colour closely)
  • Scissors

How to make it:

  • First, make sure you have enough material to wrap around your head snugly, with a little bit of wiggle room for tying the knots on each end.
  • Tie the strands together at one end, attaching them to the hair elastic. Pull tight!

  • Braid the strands together, making sure to keep the design as even as possible...unless you're going for that messy braid look.
  • When there is a long enough braid to wrap around your head, tie the loose end to the other side of the hair elastic. Pull tight and then snip off the excess material.
  • Try it on and voilĂ ! You have made your very own braided headband.

I have tried this design with several types of material to see the different effects...it's fun and I find it works best when you have slightly thicker strands, rather than thin rope or threads.

Hope it turns out!
